Piano Lessons FAQ

Q: What ages do you teach?

A: Pretty much everybody! I start piano lessons as young as five years old, and I've taught students of a variety of ages.

Q: How long of a lesson do you recommend taking?

A: This will vary from student to student, but a good rule of thumb if your'e just starting out is to begin with 30 minute lessons. 30 minutes is generally ideal for beginners for a long time, and when the time comes you may want to have a longer time slot, it usually becomes apparent. Younger kids especially should not have a lesson time longer than 30 minutes.

Q: Do you use a specific lesson book series?

A: I primarily use Faber's Piano Adventures series, but I have other lesson books I love as well and it really depends on what will best serve the needs of each individual student! I find it best to be flexible and open-minded when it comes to finding the right approach to lessons.

Q: Do you specialize in a particular genre?

A: I consider myself an “all-arounder” when it comes to music-- I am experienced in classical piano, but I also love to play pop charts, jazz, film scores, video game music, sacred music, and more. I enjoy getting to connect with all kinds of students and get them excited about piano with the music that matters most to them!

Q: How often should I/my child practice?

A: The most important thing, especially when starting out, is creating a practice routine. Beginners certainly don't need to practice for 30 minutes a day, but what will create a great practice habit is making a point of practicing even for a little bit every single day. As you or your child progress, you'll see that time naturally increasing as practicing becomes joyful and feels like less of a chore.

Q: What are your qualifications?

A: I am a summa cum laude graduate from CSU Northridge's prestigious Bachelor of Music program in Film Scoring-- as such, I am trained in piano, voice, orchestration, arranging, music theory, and more. In addition to my collegiate studies, I have been playing the piano since 2009 and composing on the piano since 2012. I have been teaching piano lessons to learners of all ages since graduating in 2019.
